APA-Lusaka (Zambia) Zambian police besieged the Lusaka home of former president Edgar Lungu and demanded to search the premises for a vehicle allegedly stolen by ex-first lady Esther Lungu, his lawyer said on Wednesday.
Lungu’s lawyer Makebi Zulu said the police wanted to search the property for a Toyota Allex allegedly stolen by the former president’s wife.
“They said they are looking for an Allex which I am sure anyone can have, and to suggest that the (former) first lady could have stolen an Allex or any vehicle that is that small is very insulting,” Zulu told journalists.
He added: “But in any event we are of the view that this is mainly intended to embarrass the former first family.”
According to a spokesperson for Lungu’s Patriotic Front party, the police surrounded the former president’s Lusaka home in an early morning raid and wanted to be granted access to enter the property.
“We woke up to a rude shock of having a battalion of police officers surrounding the house of the former president, and insisting that they want to have access to search the premises,” Nakacinda told the privately run Hot FM radio.
Lungu and the Patriotic Front were unseated by current President Hakainde Hichilema and his United Party for National Development in elections held in August 2021.
