APA-Lilongwe (Malawi) The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has announced a nationwide power outage following a “system shutdown” that occurred on Tuesday.
ESCOM said in a statement that the system shutdown was experienced around 1.45pm (1145 GMT) on Tuesday and that its engineers were working to restore electricity supply across the country.
“We are yet to establish the cause of the system shutdown,” the publicly owned electricity provider said.
It said the restoration of the power supply would be “done gradually to safeguard the system.”
The power outage affected business operations and service delivery across the country, including communication services such as mobile phone operations and traffic lights.
