President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana has handed over the leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia after his election as the flagbearer of the party for the 2024 general election on Saturday,
Dr. Bawumia polled 118,210 votes representing 61.43 per cent of the total vote cast to beat his closest contender, Ken Ohene Agyapong. who got 71,996 votes, representing 37.41 per cent.
Speaking at the handing over of the mantle of leadership to Dr Bawumia at the Accra Sports Stadium, President Akufo-Addo said that the NPP still remained the best choice for Ghanaians as such all members of the NPP must work hard to ensure that the party was retained.
Noting that the 2024 presidential election is not going to be a walk in the park, he, however, stated that with unity among the leadership as well as the rank and file, the party could make history by breaking the eight.
“With unity and determination, the party will defeat the NDC and John Mahama for the third consecutive time,” President Akufo-Addo said.
President Akufo-Addo commended the party for the peaceful manner in which the election was conducted.
“I want to thank every single NPP person here. For the last 16 years to 2007, 2010, 2014, 2020, you have conferred your confidence in me to lead this great party… you have honoured me, honour I cannot ever forget. You have allowed me to serve the party and through the party to serve the people of Ghana. I have done my best, but I still have one more task to do and that is with all my strength all my energy to help the new flagbearer, help Mahamu¬du Bawumia to win election of 2024,” the report by the Ghanaian Times quoted President Akufo Addo as saying.
In his acceptance speech, Dr Bawumia assured the rank and file of the party that he will not disappoint them and expressed his profound gratitude to all party faithful for putting their trust in him.
He stated that he has his own vision and priorities and therefore given the opportunity by the people of Ghana to lead, he would build an inclusive, food self-sufficient, data-driven and systems based nation that would fully participate in the global digital revolution to solve the problems of Ghana.
“I want to lead a nation that improves and unleashes the talents of our youth and offers good jobs with good pay and sustainable growth with macroeconomic discipline,” he added.
