President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana has lauded the role sports plays in bringing the African Continent together.
Declaring open the African Games open at the University of Ghana Sports Centre, Legon, Accra on Friday, President Akufo Addo said that it was heartwarming to witness the role sports plays in bringing the continent together.
He urged the athletes and officials to display the spirit of sportsmanship and integrity during the Games.
Reiterating the need for the participating countries to display fair play and mutual respect all through the Games, President Akufo-Addo noted that Africa is blessed with rich and diverse cultures and called on the participants to cherish the different cultures, traditions and identity of their fellow participants.
“As you compete in the Games in the coming days, remember that your efforts will inspire countless individuals across the continent. Strive for excellence, push your limits and showcase the immense talents that Africa possesses,” he said.
In his speech, Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, promised the athletes and officials that Ghana will deliver an unforgettable competition, supported by state-of-the-art sporting facilities.
The opening ceremony was marked with rich displays of rich cultures, music, march pass by athletes, while Diplomats, Ministers, Senior Government officials, sportsmen and women, celebrities and musicians were in attendance.
More than 3000 athletes from 53 countries are participating in 29 sports in.
Ghana won the bid to host the 13th African Games in 2018.
