APA – Accra (Ghana) The mass firing of state officials in Ghana is President Nana Akufo-Addo’s most significant move in an election year which spells the end of his second and final term in office.
As a bolt from the blue the president’s office announced he has removed Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and 17 ministers and deputy ministers in a major cabinet reshuffle announced in the Ghanaian capital Accra on Wednesday.
According to the statement by the Presidency, dated February 14, 2024 and signed by the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, the changes are with immediate effect.
It did not state reasons for their removal.
The statement added that President Akufo-Addo personally expressed his sincere appreciation directly to each of the ministers and deputy ministers, who have been axed from the government, for their commitment, competence, dedication and hard work while in office.
His office said the removed ministers had ”helped in the realisation of government’s mandate to the Ghanaian people over the last seven years, and wished each of them well in their future endeavours”.
It explained that President Akufo-Addo has submitted to Parliament, for prior approval, the names of the new persons handpicked by him for appointment as ministers and deputy ministers of state, in accordance with articles 78, 79 and 256, respectively, of the country’s constitution.
Following the cabinet reshuffle, nine ministers designate and 13 deputy ministers designate will be sent to the parliament for approval.
