The Ghanaian Times says that following protracted students protest at the UEW in
the Central Region over the dismissal of some lecturers, the university has been
closed down indefinitely on the directives of the Central Regional Security Council
(REGSEC).
The students engaged in chaotic confrontations overnight, blocking some major
roads on their Winneba and Ajumako campuses, thereby forcing the REGSEC
to close down the school.
Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan, who made the announcement to the
media in Winneba on Thursday, explained that the decision was to protect lives and
property.
The Daily Graphic, on the other hand, said the Justice Emile Short Commission,
constituted to investigate the violence that erupted during the Ayawaso West
Wuogon by-election on January 31, 2019, has presented its report to President
Nana Akufo-Addo in Accra.
In an address, President Akufo-Addo promised to confront the realities
that led to the violence, which resulted in a shooting incident from the police
SWAT team deployed to the area to maintain calm and order.
About 18 people were hospitalised and discharged with some sustaining
bullet wounds.
