Rabat Theatre, located in the heart of the Bouregreg Valley, near the Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V Mausoleum, aims to boost the country’s cultural scene by promoting a modern approach to Moroccan art.
Princess Lalla Hasnaa, accompanied by French First Lady Brigitte Macron, inaugurated the Royal Theatre of Rabat on Tuesday, October 29, a flagship project designed to enrich the cultural landscape of Morocco’s capital, nicknamed the “City of Lights.”
The ceremony was part of the French First Lady’s activities during President Macron’s current state visit. After unveiling a commemorative plaque, Princess Lalla Hasnaa and Brigitte Macron attended a presentation of the theatre’s interior architecture, followed by a tour of its various facilities.
As a key element of Rabat’s development agenda, the Royal Theatre seeks to consolidate cultural infrastructure across the country while elevating Morocco’s cultural presence on the world stage.
Located in the heart of the Bouregreg Valley, close to the Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V Mausoleum, the Royal Theatre symbolizes Rabat’s cultural and artistic revival. Its aim is to energise the country’s cultural scene by promoting a modern approach to Moroccan art and celebrating the nation’s creative potential.
The Princess and First Lady were welcomed by a delegation of dignitaries, including Fouzi Lekjaa, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy and Finance; Governor Mohamed Yacoubi; Regional Council President Rachid El Abdi; Rabat Municipal Council President Fatiha El Moudni; and various other authorities.
Developed by the Bouregreg Valley Development Agency and designed by Architect Zaha Hadid, the Royal Theatre covers 7.1 hectares with a built area of 25,400 m². Its design fits perfectly into the landscape of the Bouregreg Valley, capturing the dynamism of the site.
The theatre has varied and well-distributed spaces. Accessibility is a priority, with monumental staircases, footbridges, elevators and paths designed to ensure smooth mobility for all visitors.
It also has an auditorium that can accommodate more than 1,800 spectators, characterized by its unique geometric design that improves acoustics. This versatile venue is suitable for a wide range of artistic performances in the fields of theatre, dance, ballet, opera, musicals and symphonic concerts.
Designed as a first-class venue, the auditorium has acoustic qualities that meet the highest international standards. The theatre also includes a second 250-seat performance hall, designed to host various cultural events. Its exterior houses an amphitheatre with a capacity of 7,000 seats, intended for festivals and large-scale events.
