South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday extended best wishes to the Muslim community as they embark on the sacred month of Ramadan.
In his message, he noted the importance of the values of reflection, prayer and charity that define this significant time for Muslims worldwide.
“For our Muslim brethren here at home and around the world, this is a sacred time of reflection, prayer and performing acts of charity – values that unite us all,” Ramaphosa said.
He highlighted South Africa’s strength in its diversity and reiterated the nation’s commitment to building a better society characterised by equality and opportunity for everyone.
Ramadan is observed by approximately 1.9 billion Muslims globally through fasting from sunrise to sunset, special prayers and charitable acts aimed at feeding those in need.
Ramaphosa praised these expressions of compassion and generosity, noting their critical importance in today’s troubled world.
In light of ongoing global conflicts affecting marginalised communities, he reaffirmed South Africa’s solidarity with oppressed peoples everywhere while calling for an end to intolerance, conflict, and war.
“Even as this is a time of fraternity and spiritual growth for Muslims, we are keenly aware that suffering peoples in Gaza, the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and the troubled Sahel region will experience little cheer this Ramadan.”
