APA-Pretoria (South Africa) South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent his best wishes to his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on his re-election for a record third term of office at the Chinese Communist Party’s National People’s Congress in Beijing recently.
“We look forward to deepening the bonds of cooperation that you have always championed,” Ramaphosa told Xi during a virtual address to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) on Wednesday.
With the global economy under pressure and threats to a peaceful world order, Ramaphosa said it was important to form alliances and solidarity with like-minded political parties.
“We, therefore, readily align ourselves with the four calling-ons articulated by President Xi, which call on all countries to respect the diversity of human civilisations and perspectives, while advancing the common values of humanity,” the president said.
He said South Africa supported Xi’s call for dialogue and cooperation, “that all peoples should join hands in advancing the development and progress of human civilisation.”
He added that nations of the south could not accept the increasing burden of global inequality and poverty as demonstrated by the current world order.
“Yet, we are not powerless in the face of such difficulties,” Ramaphosa said.
He added: “Progressive internationalism requires building alliances and solidarity among like-minded parties in the south and north,” the president said.
Ramaphosa said his ruling African National Congress party was keen to strengthen relations with the CCP, pointing to developmental initiatives that were critical for “our collective success as nations of the south.”
