President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent his best wishes to South Africa’s Muslim community as the umma celebrates the holy month of Ramadan starting on Wednesday.
“I wish all Muslims well for this Holy Month during which all sectors of our diverse society are enriched by and benefit from the values and social good associated with Ramadan,” Ramaphosa said.
He added: “The social solidarity and fraternity that characterises Ramadan is especially important and welcome amid the coronavirus pandemic.”
Ramaphosa expressed appreciation at the steps Muslim religious leaders and congregations in the country took to adhere to the Covid-19 health regulations and, through this, secure the safety of all communities.
During Ramadan, Muslims engage in prayers, fasting, some forms of abstention and acts of charity towards both the poor and neighbours.
