APA-Pretoria (South Africa) President Cyril Ramaphosa has set May 29 as the date for the 2024 national and provincial elections.
In a statement on Tuesday night, the Presidency said, in coming up with the election date, Ramaphosa had consulted with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and had convened a meeting with all nine Provincial Premiers and the IEC to discuss the state of readiness for the general elections.
“President Cyril Ramaphosa has, in accordance with section 49(2) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, read with section 17 of the Electoral act of 1998, determined 29 May 2024, as the date for the 2024 General National and Provincial elections,
It said Ramaphosa would officially proclaim the election date in the Government Gazette “in due course”, after which voter registration would be closed.
“We also urge unregistered voters to use the online registration platform to register,” Ramaphosa is quoted as saying.
The 2024 elections would coincide with South Africa’s celebration of 30 years of freedom and democracy.
More than 27 million people are registered to vote, according to the IEC. These are slightly more than the 26.75 million registered vote for the last elections held in 2019.
