President Cyril Ramaphosa told British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak that South Africa is keen to deepen its relationship with the United Kingdom to boost trade and investment between the two countries.
Ramaphosa, who met Sunak at his 10 Downing Street residence in London for discussions, said he was in the country to promote trade, investment and the just energy transition of which the UK is a key partner.
The UK is one of countries that pledged a US$8.5 billion funding for climate change projects in South Africa during COP26 in Glasgow last year.
“I welcome our discussions and I really hope that we can broaden everything we do together,” the president said, adding: “So, for us, this is a great opportunity to deepen and broaden our links.”
Sunak said he was confident that the UK and South Africa “can broaden and deepen that relationship.”
“South Africa and the UK obviously are very strong partners, allies, friends and we share the same objectives – notably transitioning to clean energy while creating jobs and opportunities for our citizens,” Sunak said.
Ramaphosa also participated in a UK-SA business forum in the city to end his state visit on Wednesday.
