APA-Pretoria (South Africa) South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to travel to India this weekend to attend the G20 leaders’ summit in New Delhi, the presidency has announced.
In a statement on Thursday, the presidency said the group “plays an important role in shaping and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international economic issues”.
“The G20 countries initially focused largely on broad macroeconomic issues. But it has since expanded its agenda to include trade, sustainable development, health, agriculture, energy, environment, climate change and anti-corruption,” the presidency said.
As a member of the G20, South Africa seeks to provide a strategic foresight in establishing an economic and international policy platform that would drive and negotiate the best possible outcomes for the country, Africa and the developing world, according to the high office.
Ramaphosa would on the margins of the G20 gathering, hold bilateral meetings with other leaders to strengthen Pretoria’s diplomatic, economic and cultural ties, it said.
The theme for this year’s summit is “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” the presidency said, adding that the country would assume the G20 presidency in 2025.
