President Cyril Ramaphosa’s cabinet survived a vote of no confidence late Wednesday after parliament voted against a motion by the main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) to have all ministers sacked for incompetence.
The DA had last month tabled a motion of no confidence against the entire cabinet, except for Ramaphosa.
Addressing the National Assembly on Wednesday on the motion, DA leader John Steenhuisen accused the cabinet of lacking coherent strategies to address poverty, poor service delivery and rampant corruption in the country as well as failing to protect lives and property.
The motion was, however, shot down by the governing African National Congress and some opposition parties following a marathon voting session.
Some 231 lawmakers voted against the motion against 131 who were in favour of having the cabinet sacked.
There was no debate on a second motion of no confidence on Ramaphosa that was initially tabled by the African Transformation Movement.
The party refused to attend the session in protest at the decision by parliament to allow cabinet ministers to vote during the process.
