APA-Maputo (Mozambique) A large ruby mined in Mozambique in 2022 has become the biggest ever stone to be sold, fetching a record US$35 million at the auction in New York on Thursday.
The 101-carat Estrela de Fura or Star of Fura stone was discovered by Fura Gems in Mozambique’s northern Cabo Delgado province.
The gem, which was described as a “once-in-a-lifetime” jewel by auctioneers Sotheby’s, has been lauded for its vivid red hue, fluorescence and high clarity.
It is believed to be the largest gem-quality ruby on record, according to Fura Gems.
Part of the funds raised from the auction would be spent on setting up a training academy to help communities in Cabo Delgado access education and technical training to provide livelihoods in mining, carpentry, engineering and agriculture, the company said last year.
