APA on Wednesday confirmed that the city is under the control of the Fano after heavy fighting against government forces and currently roads linking the city are closed and flights to Gondar were suspended.
Heavy fighting was witnessed between the two forces in Maraki, Genfo Kuchi, Azezo kebele 18, Ayra , Addis Alem, and Alem Ber where hundreds of government soldiers were killed and many others surrendered before the Fano took control of the city.
There have been accusations that government soldiers have been targeting civilians in Gondar and a hotel in the city was shelled by heavy artillery.
Yesterday the Fano force announced that they took control of several major towns in Northern Gondar including Debrark.
Addis Ababa had planned to eliminate the Fano force by mid September but the Fano force remained and expanded through time.
As has been the case in the past one year, Fano forces are getting more ground in the region and continue to enjoy popular support.
Most rural towns are under Fano forces and government structures are removed from the parts of Amhara region where the rebel forces are in control.
The fighting between government and rebel forces began a year ago after the incumbent attempted to disarm Amhara forces who helped Addis Ababa rescue from being knocked down by Tigray Defense Force, regional troops in Tigray region of northern Ethiopia.
