The renewed invasion by the rebel Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in Kilbeti Resu Zone of Ethiopia’s Afar region has displaced more than 300,000 people, the Region’s Disaster Prevention and Food Security Programme Office has announced.
Troops of the TPLF, designated by the Ethiopian Parliament as “terrorist organization” has invaded Ab’ala, Konaba, Iripti, Megale and parts of Dalo and Berhale districts and forced hundreds of thousands of innocent people to flee their homes, Office Head Mohammed Hussein said on Friday in a briefing.
The rebel group is now attacking innocent civilians with heavy artilleries from highest places it has occupied in the region, he said, adding that the humanitarian situation is deteriorating as many are fleeing in all directions.
The Office is trying to deliver emergency humanitarian aid to the people sheltered in 14 temporary camps, Mohammed said, adding that there were still many people scattered in various unidentified places without any accommodation, food and shelter.
Mohammed called on the international community to respond to the catastrophic humanitarian situation that has been inflicted by TPLF in the region.
He also called on the government to support the Afar people in the struggle against the TPLF and ensure peace and stability in the region.
The TPLF has so far massacred hundreds of innocent people, looted and destroyed various institutions, including hospitals and healthcare centers in the Afar Region.
