APA – N’Djamena (Chad) – This is the first official visit by a senior Russian official to Chad since General Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno came to power.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in N’Djamena Wednesday afternoon (5 June) as part of his Africa tour. Chad is the last stop on a tour that has taken the Russian diplomatic chief to Guinea, Congo and Burkina Faso.
Welcomed by his Chadian counterpart Abdraman Koumallah, Sergey Lavrov held a tête-à-tête with President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno later in the evening.
He shortly afterwards held a joint press conference with his Chadian counterpart.
This historic visit is part of a drive to strengthen bilateral cooperation. In January 2024, President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno was received by Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.
According to historian Saleh Bakary, Chad’s relations with Russia are based on higher education and agriculture.
At a time of geopolitical upheaval, Chad’s geographical position is strategic for the powers that be, says the historian and specialist in peace and security issues.
