Rwandan President Paul Kagame has appointed Maj Gen Eugene Nkubito as the new commander of the ongoing counter terrorism operations in Cabo Delgado province, Mozambique, a military source confirmed Thursday.
Maj Gen Nkubito was until recently serving as the Division commander in-charge of Eastern Province and Kigali City
He had previously served as Senior Representative in the United Nations Missions in South Sudan (UNMISS).
The Joint Force which includes the Rwandan contingent deployed since July last year currently works closely with Mozambique Armed Defence Forces (FADM) and forces from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in designated sectors of responsibility.
This deployment is based on the good bilateral relations between Mozambique and Rwanda, following the signing of several agreements between the two countries in 2018.
It is grounded in Rwanda’s commitment to the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) doctrine and the 2015 Kigali Principles on the Protection of Civilians, it said.
