Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) on Monday confirmed the arrest of the vice-president of the Rwanda Volleyball Federation (FRVB), Jean de Dieu Bagirishya, two days after the national team’s disqualification from the Women’s African Championship
2021.
Bagirishya was arrested following an investigation in relation with the suspension of the national volleyball team from CAVB tournament, RIB spokesperson, Dr Thierry Murangira said.
“He is suspected to have used forged documents in exercising his functions,” he said without offering details.
He added, “Investigations continue to establish the role of other federation
The arrest comes after Rwanda has been excluded from the 2021 Women’s Volleyball African Nations Championship by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB).
The suspension follows a complaint filed by Nigeria, challenging the nationality of players who featured for the Rwandan national side.
The four players in question are, right-attacking player Aline Siqueira, center court player Apolinario Caroline Taina, setter Mariana Da Silva and left-attacking player Moreira Bianca Gomes.
They were all making their debut for Rwanda in international volleyball.
The complaint, according to the statement, was accepted by the African Volleyball Federation (CAVB), meaning that the players in question are suspended as well as the Rwandan Volleyball Federation (FRVB).
The host, who secured a place in the semi-finals, have forfeited all the matches played so far.
