President Paul Kagame held talks with David Lappartient, the president of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), as Rwanda bids to host World Cycling Championships in 2025, sport sources confirmed to APA in Kigali on Tuesday.
The talks between the two leaders took place at the time Rwanda is currently organizing the Tour du Rwanda cycling competition, one of the country’s biggest sporting events.
It is the second biggest cycling race on the continent.
Since February 2019, Tour du Rwanda was upgraded from a 2.2 to a 2.1 UCI category race, making it only Africa’s second race with 2.1 badge, after Gabon’s La Tropicale Amissa Bongo.
Globally, the race is renowned for how passionately it is spectated, with hundreds of thousands lining the streets to watch and cheer on the riders.
The host nations between 2019 and 2024 have already been determined.
If successful, Rwanda would be the first African country to host the world’s most prestigious cycling event.
Rwanda faces competition from Morocco for the hosting rights.
