Their arrests came after both were indicted for embezzlement.
They are John Rutayisire and his successor Janvier Gasana, all former DGs of the REB who are accused of being responsible for about $280,000 of improperly allocated funds in One Laptop per Child (OLPC) project since 2011.
The OLPC is a key project that was introduced in Rwanda since 2008 with the aim of enhancing education through the introduction of technology in primary schools across Rwanda.
Reports indicate that by 2018, over 60,000 laptops have been deployed to all schools across the East African country.
According to Rwanda National Public Prosecution Authority (NPPA), the duo are being indicted alongside their two former colleagues including the former Director of Finance, Ali Harelimana and the Director of Administration, Juvenal Ngemanyi, the Budget Officer of the board.
Rutayisire headed the institution from 2011 when it was created out of a merger of several institutions under the education sector, until 2015.
Gasana replaced him the same year, serving until 2017 when he was replaced, report said.
