APA – Kigali (Rwanda) – Rwandan Football Federation President Olivier Nizeyimana has confirmed his resignation citing personal reasons.
“I have decided to leave this duty, which I carried out honorably and proudly but I had difficulties that cannot allow me to fulfill leadership obligations as required,” Nizeyimana said in a written statement seen by APA on Wednesday.
His resignation follows a series of scandals that have rocked the football governing body and the continued poor showing by the national team.
Nizeyimana has served as head of Rwandan football since June 2021.
Meanwhile, local media claimed that Nizeyimana stepped down in view of a conflict of interest.
He is the target of mounting criticism over his transport company Volcano Express winning a tender to run most of some big sporting events taking place in Rwanda.
Rwanda Football Federation Vice President Marcel Habyarimana will be in charge until the new president is elected.
