A mass graves holding many victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi has been discovered 26 years after the atrocities beneath school building in Nyanza, a district in Southern Rwanda, a senior local administrative official confirmed Sunday to APA in Kigali.
The graves were discovered in Busasamana village, when workers were digging foundations for the extension school building, Erasme Ntazinda, the mayor of Nyanza district said.
According to hime, works to exhume the bodies from the graves started immediately but the first bodies were found early Sunday about hundred metres in one of the mass graves.
Earlier Sunday, many TV stations reported the incident where genocide survivors could be seen around the mass grave to see if they could be able to identify their perished relatives through the torn clothes they were putting on when they were killed.
The discovery of fresh mass grave comes one week after Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has arrested 8 officials from Hospital in Southern Rwanda for allegedly hiding information related to victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The officials were apprehended after discovery of bodies buried in a mass grave beneath the hospital in Ruhango district in Southern Rwanda.
Taking on twitter, RIB said that “Hiding Genocide victims’ remains is an act of Genocide denial”
RIB therefore appeals to the public to continue sharing information on where Genocide victims were (hastily) buried so as to accord them a decent burial,” the East African country’s investigation agency said on its twitter handle.
