At least 15 people were killed while several others sustained serious injuries in separate public transport accidents this week in Rwanda, local police in these remote regions confirmed to APA Wednesday.
The first accident happened late Tuesday when the driver of a public bus lost control of the vehicle after the brake apparently failed, killing 11 people on spot and leaving 20 other seriously injured in Karongi, a district in Western Rwanda.
The second accident happened early Tuesday in the afternoon 14:00 p.m local time (12:00 GMT) in Kayonza, a district in Eastern Rwanda, when another public transport bus lost control and veered into the bicycle lane before killing 3 people on board.
In another accident which happened Wednesday a trader riding on a motorbike was hit by a bus in Kamonyi, a district in Southern Rwanda
Accidents are common on Rwandan roads involving public transport.
Despite speed governors which are now mandatory to be fitted in all public transport vehicles, Police have registered several cases against the bus drivers for overspeeding, reckless driving and killing people on the road.
Further investigation is underway, the police said.
According to statistics on road security status in Rwanda, road accidents reduced by 20 percent from 549 cases recorded in 2017 to 437 cases in 2018.
