Rwanda is closely monitoring the impact of the second major Cyclone Kenneth to hit Mozambique, the country’s meteorological department said in a statement made available to APA in Kigali on Saturday.
Weather predictions indicate that prevailing winds blowing east-west over the weekend was expected to cause damage at the ground are a result of outflow generated by Tropical Cyclone Kenneth, the Rwanda Meteorological agency said.
“The speed of tropical cyclones has decreased over last two days which translate into reduction in precipitation over most of the country, over the weekend,” the statement said.
However reports indicate that there will be a possibility of heavy rain in North and Western parts of the country over the weekend.
Thunderstorms with precipitation beyond 10 mm are also expected in Eastern and Southern parts of the country, it said.
According to the Climate Outlook report released in February this year, heavy rains are expected in several parts of Rwanda between March and May with the potential of flooding and other related
disasters such as landslides, especially in North and Western Rwanda.
Earlier this month, Cyclone Kenneth struck with winds of 220km/h (140mph) several weeks after a previous cyclone killed hundreds and devastated large areas in several parts across Southern region of Africa.
