Rwanda’s main air carrier RwandAir has launched its maiden flight to the UK capital London.
The inaugural direct Kigali -London Heathrow flight took off Sunday evening, opening another chapter in the airline’s expansion drive.
The new service will replace its current schedule to the UK capital, which has been operated via Brussels for the last five years.
RwandAir flew to 29 destinations across 24 countries throughout Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia before it suspended passenger flights in March last year.
Last April, the airline acknowledged that it has been “greatly impacted” by the COVID-19 pandemic and has to implement several temporary measures to cut expenditure, including the reduction of employees’ salaries, to “protect the company’s future well-being and to avoid laying off staff.
Connecting Kigali to markets in Asia, Europe and later alone America means increase in volumes of trade as well as enhanced tourism which will drive economic development and sustainability, according to experts.
RwandAir has already offered to cut freight charges for exporters to as low as $0.95 per kilogramme.
