Rwanda’s flag carrier, is set to resume its flights to Southern Africa starting December 23, according to the airline statement obtained Monday.
The move comes after the airline announced in early November, the suspension of all flights to South Africa and Zimbabwe over the Omicron outbreak.
With the decision, Rwanda’s national flag carrier RwandAir has effectively suspended flights to and from Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa, Lusaka in Zambia and Harare in Zimbabwe.
In addition, the airline also announced that it will not board passengers from South Africa and Zimbabwe traveling to Dubai.
“We’re pleased to announce the resumption of services to Southern Africa effective 23rd Dec 2021,” the airline said in a statement released Monday.
Among the new travel directives to curb the spread, arriving or departing passengers at Kigali International Airport must present a negative Covid-19 PCR test taken 72 hours prior to departure, and a three-day mandatory quarantine at designated hotels.
Several countries have tightened travel restrictions from southern Africa.
The WHO, however, said Sunday that it is not yet clear whether Omicron could easily spread from person to person compared to other variants, even though the number of people testing positive has climbed in South Africa attributable to the variant.
