Rwandan President Paul Kagame has paid tribute to the late Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno who died earlier this week after he was reportedly injured in clashes with rebels, according to a official statement obtained Thursday by APA in Kigali.
Reacting to the incident, the Rwandan leader expressed his “sincere condolences to the people of Chad and the bereaved family for the passing of President Idriss Deby Itno”
“He will be remembered for his invaluable contribution in the fight against terrorism and extremism, among other things,” Kagame said.
It is expected that a State funeral will take place on Friday for the late Chadian President Déby who died from injuries sustained in clashes with rebels in the north of the Central African nation.
President Déby, 68, had been in power for more than three decades. The announcement of his death came a day after provisional results of elections held on 11 April showed he would win a sixth term in office.
His 37-year-old son, four-star General Mahamat Idriss Deby, has been named as the interim leader of an 18-month military transitional council.
