One of South Africa’s local councils has instituted a probe after some of its employees were pictured sleeping or sitting on top of graves.
In pictures that went viral on social media this week, a number of employees – believed to be from the municipality’s parks department – are seen sitting or sleeping on graves.
In a statement on Tuesday, Msunduzi municipality in Kwa-Zulu Natal province said it has ordered an investigation into the “unacceptable behaviour”.
“The municipality will not condone such behaviour and can confirm that processes are in place for the implicated employees to be charged for misconduct and for putting the municipality in disrepute,” the municipality said.
Sitting or sleeping on the grave of someone is considered a taboo in most African cultures amid the belief that some do it for ritual purposes.
