APA-Johannesburg (South Africa) South African Afro-pop singer Bulelwa Mkutukana, better known as Zahara, died on Monday night from suspected liver complications, Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa announced.
The 36-year-old died at a Johannesburg hospital last night.
“Zahara and her guitar made an incredible and lasting impact in South African music,” Kodwa posted on X, formerly Twitter.
She was admitted to hospital last month complaining of liver complications.
The multi-award-winning songstress released five studio albums, with her 2011 debut album Loliwe going double platinum.
Throughout her career, the self-taught guitarist was honoured with 17 South African Music Awards accolades.
Following the news of her passing, social media platforms have been flooded with messages of condolence, as fans and admirers express their shock and deep sadness.
