APA-Pretoria (South Africa) The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has distanced itself from utterances by a former officer who called for the removal of President Cyril Ramaphosa from office.
In a statement on Tuesday, the SANDF said the former officer identified as Sylvester Mangelele was fired in 2018 and his social media ranting was not an official position.
“The SANDF condemns Sylvester Mangolele’s utterances with (the) contempt it deserves,” SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini said.
This comes after a video went viral on social media on Tuesday in which Mangolele could be heard calling for Ramaphosa to step down within 48 hours or risk being forced out of office.
Mangolele cited violations of South Africa’s constitution by Ramaphosa as the main reason for his removal.
