South African police are investigating the murder of an accountant who was investigating high-level corruption cases in a case that is suspected to be a targeted hit.
Insolvency expert Cloete Murray was shot by unknown gunmen on Saturday together with his son in Johannesburg’s Midrand area.
Murray was liquidator of African Global Operations (formerly Bosasa), a company implicated in numerous government contract scandals.
The Commission of Inquiry into the State of Capture, which was led by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo and published its report late last year, concluded that Bosasa extensively bribed politicians and government officials to get government contracts during the nine-year presidency of Jacob Zuma from 2009 to 2018.
Murray also worked as a liquidator for firms linked to controversial exiled Gupta brothers who were accused of being the masterminds of South Africa’s state capture scandal.
The police said they are investigating if there is a link between the murder and the investigations into the Bosasa and Gupta scandals.
