APA-Pretoria (South Africa) Despite the challenges facing the University of South Africa (UNISA), the institution continued to serve all in society without discrimination, former president Thabo Mbeki has said.
Mbeki, in his role as UNISA chancellor, said this when he delivered a congratulatory message to the university’s celebrations of 150 years of its establishment in Pretoria on Monday.
Mbeki said every South African was entitled to education regardless of their race and choices in life.
Deputy President Paul Mashatile, also speaking during the occasion, said his government was doing all in its power to give the institution necessary support to meet the challenges the university was currently facing.
He urged UNISA management to ensure that the institution acted as a leader to other institutions and should adapt the use of technology to benefit societies.
“We strongly recommend that you maintain your pioneering position by making it one of the world’s most diverse universities,” the deputy president said.
