APA-Johannesburg (South Africa)South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) has embarked on a voter registration campaign to support the country’s Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) efforts to mobilise eligible citizens to register to vote – especially first-time voters, a senior party official has said.
ANC’s First Deputy Secretary General, Nomvula Mokonyane, on Sunday disclosed that the party had launched an online voter registration drive which she would be leading as the country geared up for the 2024 general elections.
She said the voter registration campaign would be rolled out across all the nine provinces to reach all the youth nationwide.
According to Mokonyane, the party decided to bring young people together to highlight to them the importance of voting.
“The targets are the first-time voters among them, and a new way of reaching young people and finding them where it excites them (online),” Mokonyane said.
She said the strategy was to find them in a space the youth were able to continue with their lives.
What was important was the ability to bring them together and have fun. And while having fun, “do the very responsible duty of being responsible citizens,” Mokonyane said.
The decline of young people in the voting process was a cause for concern for the party, she noted.
“This action determines our concerns and we have a solution — doing the right thing by registering the youth,” the first deputy secretary general said.
