South Africa’s Lerato Mataboge has been elected as the new Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy at the African Union (AU) Commission.
The announcement was met with enthusiasm from the South African government, which expressed confidence in Mataboge’s ability to drive critical developments on the continent.
“We are confident that Ms. Mataboge will play a pivotal role in advancing infrastructure development and enhancing energy security across our continent,” International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola said on Friday.
Mataboge brings extensive experience to her new position, currently serving as deputy director general in the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition.
Her background includes founding and leading Trade Invest Africa, an initiative focused on fostering sustainable partnerships between governments and private sectors aimed at increasing intra-African trade and investment specifically within infrastructure and energy sectors.
The AU Commission elections were held during the ongoing AU summit where leaders from member states convened to discuss pressing issues facing the continent.
The commission plays a crucial role in implementing policies that promote economic growth, stability and integration among African nations.
