APA-Pretoria (South Africa) South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday congratulated his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan following his re-election for a record third term.
Erdogan secured another five years in power after beating main opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu in a tightly contested presidential election run-off held on Sunday.
Kilicdaroglu has, however, denounced “the most unfair election in recent years”.
The opposition leader, who did not explicitly concede defeat, accused Eedogan’s party of mobilising the state apparatus against him.
Erdogan garnered 52.14 percent of the vote against Kilicdaroglu’s 47.86 percent, according to the country’s electoral body.
“President Ramaphosa said South Africa looks forward to working with Türkiye under President Erdoğan to consolidate existing strong relations at the bilateral and multilateral levels,” the South African presidency said in a statement.
Formal relations between South Africa and Turkey were established in 1991.
