APA-Cape Town (South Africa) The Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) has classified South Africa’s University of Cape Town (UCT) as the best higher learning institution in Africa on its 2023 list, a senior official said on Tuesday.
UCT spokesperson Elijah Moholola said indicators used to rank the institutions included research output, high-quality research, influence and citations.
The ranking placed UCT at 1.4 percent of top universities globally, Moholola said.
“UCT’s highest ranked indicator is quality of education which, at 182nd position, was down four places from last year,” he said in a statement.
The alumni employment indicator (placed 224th) performed well and continued its climb, moving up 13 places from last year, which was also up 23 places on the 2021 ranking, according to the official.
The research performance indicator (ranked 245th) improved by five places compared to last year, he added.
Over 20,000 universities globally were assessed but only the top 2,000 received a global ranking by the CWUR.
