South Korea has made a commitment to help Seychelles deal with piracy in the Indian Ocean.
This comes as Seoul prepares to host countries on the continent in the Korea-Africa summit billed for June.
Piracy has witnessed something of a resurgence on the Indian Ocean in recent years, threatening shipping to island nations such as Sychelles and adversely affecting tourism in the region.
The sideline activities of the Korea-Africa summit were the main points of talks between Seoul’s ambassador-designate to Victoria, Mr. Jung Kang and Seychellian Foreign Affairs and Tourism minister Mr. Sylvestre Radegonde.
Enhancing cooperation in the fields of tourism, education and particularly maritime security and assistance with patrolling Seychelles’ waters due to the resurgence of piracy, was taken up by the two sides.
The talks on Monday also covered cooperation in fisheries, aquaculture and the Blue Economy.
They agreed to push forward with an MOU on cooperation in these areas.
Ambassador-designate Kang, will be presenting his credentials to President Wavel Ramkalawan, as the 13th ambassador of Korea to Seychelles.
