The Southern African Development Community (SADC) will on Friday hold a virtual Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government to review progress and mandate of the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM).
The extraordinary summit will be chaired by Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera who is the current chairperson of the 16-member regional bloc.
“The summit will, among the key issues, discuss the support for effective operation of SAMIM objectives to bring peace and stability in Cabo Delgado in the Republic of Mozambique,” SADC said in a statement on Tuesday.
SAMIM was deployed in July 2021 following approval by the Extraordinary SADC Summit held in Maputo, Mozambique, in June of the same. It is SADC’s regional response to support Mozambique to combat terrorism and acts of violent extremism in some districts of Cabo Delgado province.
The meeting will be preceded by an extraordinary summit of the SADC Organ Troika, which will be chaired by President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and attended by Presidents Mokgweetsi Masisi, Hage Geingob and Filipe Nyusi of Botswana, Namibia and Mozambique, respectively.
South Africa, Botswana and Namibia currently make up the security troika for SADC and are responsible for handling all issues to do with peace and security in the region.
