South African police have arrested 67 men suspected of gang-raping eight women and robbing them of valuables while they were filming a music video in Krugersdorp’s West Village, APA learnt on Saturday.
This incident prompted President Cyril Ramaphosa to order Police Minister Bheki Cele to apprehended the suspects immediately.
“We have directed the minister of police and law enforcement agencies to immediately embark on this to make sure that the perpetrators of this crime are apprehended immediately,” Ramaphosa said.
The president was speaking to 2,000 delegates who are attending the African National Congress’ (ANC) sixth national policy conference in Johannesburg this weekend.
Responding to the president’s call, Gauteng provincial police immediately went in search of the culprits in the gang-rape and armed robbery, spokesperson Brenda Muridili said.
As a result, some 67 people have been arrested following the search at the mine dump in Krugersdorp in Gauteng, Muridili said.
Cele said two suspects who resisted arrest were shot dead, and another was in hospital for treatment.
The victims, between the ages of 19 and 35 years old, were raped when the gang attacked them at gunpoint while filming a music video on Thursday.
The suspects are expected to appear in court next week, police said.
