President Cyril Ramaphosa is on Monday expected to know his fate when the ruling African National Congress (ANC)’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meets to deliberate on a damning report over a robbery cover-up scandal involving the South African leader.
A parliamentary inquiry last week called out Ramaphosa, noting that the South African leader may have violated the constitution by hoarding a large sum of foreign currency at his Phala Phala farm and trying to cover up a robbery that occurred in February 2020.
The robbery only came to light in June this year after former state security chief Arthur Frazer filed a criminal complaint against Ramaphosa.
A three-member panel of legal experts that conducted the inquiry on behalf of parliament said Ramaphosa had a case to answer, prompting calls for the president to resign.
Monday’s NEC meeting is expected to deliberate on recommendations of the party’s National Working Committee that met on Sunday.
Ramaphosa’s critics wants him to resign, saying he has brought the party into disrepute and that any attempt to protect him could harm the party’s chances at the 2024 national general elections.
The South African leader, however, denies any wrongdoing.
