South Africa has administered 9,419 injections in the past 24 hours, reaching 16,827,790 people who have received the protective jabs against the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the Ministry of Health on Monday here.
Out of this number, some 8,391,620 individuals are fully vaccinated with one of the two vaccines being used in the country – the single-dose Johnson and Johnson or the double-dose Pfizer vaccines, the ministry said.
This development has enabled the country to exit the third wave of the pandemic, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said.
“The national seven-day average of daily case numbers, positivity rate and testing rate continued to decrease — with sustained decreases seen in all provinces,” the NICD said.
The agency said latest data showed 967 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 2,896,943 since the outbreak of the disease in March 2020.
In addition, there has been an increase of 56 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, and 34 people succumbing to the disease — bringing the death toll to 87,001 people, the NCID said.
