South African police have arrested a Pakistan national believed to be the kingpin of a transnational human trafficking syndicate that has been targeting nationals of Asian countries, APA learnt here on Friday.
Mohammed Dilpazeer Azam was arrested during a raid at a house in downtown Johannesburg on Sunday.
Further investigations after Azam’s arrest led the police to a lodge in the same area where at least 10 Bangladeshi nationals were rescued.
It is alleged that Azam would call families of his victims and demand ransom. The phone calls were used to track him.
Azam appeared in court on Thursday and was remanded in custody to February 17.
