The South African government is investigating the activities of the four individuals who were this week designated as financial facilitators of Islamic State operations on the continent, a senior official said.
The United States has designated four South Africa-based alleged funders of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and ISIS-Mozambique in a move meant to dismantle financial support networks for terrorist groups across the continent.
Farhad Hoomer, Siraaj Miller, Abdella Abadigga and Peter Mbaga are alleged to be the main facilitators of funding for ISIS branches and networks across Africa, including the Islamic State for West Africa Province that is perpetrating evil in northern Nigeria.
Ministry of Justice official Chrispin Phiri said on Friday that South Africa is working with US officials to stop the activities of the four individuals and cut off the financial supply lines for ISIS in Africa.
“The relevant South African authorities are investigating this matter and have been engaging with the relevant US authorities on the OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) designation,” Phiri is quoted as saying.
ISIS-linked militants have been leading an insurgence in northern Mozambique where they have killed over 3,500 people since October 2017 and displaced close to a million others from their homes.
