President Cyril Ramaphosa has denied that there was anything criminal about stashing US$4 million in chair cushions at his Phala Phala farm in Limpopo province two years ago.
Ramaphosa made the denial in answering questions in the National Assembly on a number of issues the lawmakers tabled in Cape Town on Thursday.
The money was stolen in a robbery in February 2020 allegedly perpetrated by some criminals from Namibia who were led to the farm by Ramaphosa’s own domestic servant working at the farm.
“I have said and admitted that there was a theft at the farm. I reported to a general in the South African Police Service. And he later informed me he reported the matter to another general in the South African Police Service,” the president said.
He added: “I deny that there was any form of money laundering.”
