South African President Cyril Ramaphosa returned to work on Monday after a week of self-isolation at his Cape Town home following his positive test for Covid-19 last week, his office has said.
Ramaphosa tested positive after feeling unwell at the end of a state memorial service for the last apartheid-era president FW de Klerk on 12 December in Cape Town.
According to Minister in the Presidency, Mondli Gungubele, Ramaphosa is scheduled to chair the final Cabinet meeting for 2021 on Wednesday this week.
Ramaphosa extended his gratitude to all South Africans and friends internationally who conveyed their best wishes during his quarantine period, the minister said.
“In turn, the president wishes all persons infected with Covid-19 a safe and speedy recovery as well,” Gungubele said in a statement.
He added: “President Ramaphosa repeats his call for everyone in the country to stay safe by being vaccinated, wearing face masks, washing or sanitising hands frequently, maintaining social distance and avoiding gatherings.”
Meanwhile, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, who tested positive for the disease at the weekend after experiencing mild symptoms, continued to receive treatment.
Mantashe was “in good spirits and in self-isolation”, Gungubele said.
