South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday paid tribute to former Johannesburg mayor Mpho Moerane who has succumbed to injuries sustained in a recent road accident.
The former mayor’s family said Moerane died on Wednesday due to injuries sustained during a motor vehicle accident happened a week ago.
“The President’s thoughts go out to Mr. Moerane’s wife, Fikile, and their four children as well as the former mayor’s extended family and network of friends, comrades and colleagues,” the office said.
It praised Moerance for “his contribution to his political home, the African National Congress, and to the development of Johannesburg as one of our country’s and continent’s most important economic and cultural centres.”
Moerane is the third former Johannesburg mayor to die in office since October 2021 after the passing of his predecessors Jolidee Matongo and Geoff Makhubo in quick succession.
Moerane served as mayor between 1 October and 22 November 2021, according to the presidency.
