There were 109 new coronavirus cases on Monday, bringing the total number of recorded infections to 4,002,981 since the disease broke out in the country in March 2020, a health agency said on Tuesday.
Among the worst affected regions was Gauteng province which recorded 52 cases, while the Western Cape had 21 new infections and KwaZulu-Natal had 17, according to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) in Pretoria.
The NCID said the rest of the provinces recorded less than 10 cases each.
Eight people were admitted to hospitals for Covid-19 between Sunday night and Monday evening, bringing the total to 1,002 patients who are currently receiving treatment, the NCID said.
Some 12 deaths were recorded during the period, adding to some 101,955 fatalities since March 2020, the institute said.
