South Africa has seen a rising trend in Covid-19 cases in the past two days, with over 4,000 new cases recorded during the period, Health Minister Joe Phaahla said on Friday.
The minister warned that Covid-19 was not over yet and infections were rising daily, as he pleaded with the nation to continue adhering to the remaining containment restrictions.
“Covid is not over. What we see daily despite the disaster is that the positivity rate is rising again,” Phaahla warned.
He added: “What’s stable are hospital admissions. All these things are still worrying. We want to assist (the) community with basic precautions.”
The 4,406 new Covid-19 cases have brought the overall load to 3,750,830 cases in the country, according to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) on Thursday.
The majority of the new cases were from Gauteng province (49%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (22%). The Western Cape accounted for 15%; Eastern Cape 5%; Free State, Mpumalanga, and North West 2% each, with Limpopo and Northern Cape accounting for 1%, the NICD said.
President Cyril Ramaphosa recently ended the National State of Disaster in the country following the reduction in new cases of the disease, which were less than a thousand cases daily on the average.
